In 2012, Sean and Tawni Sattler quit their jobs, sold almost everything they owned, packed up the rest of their belongings into six duffel-bags, and along with their then-three-year-old son Jackson, moved from Bellingham, WA to Vienna, Austria.
Sean and Tawni always knew in their hearts that God had called them to more than living and striving for the good ol' American Dream. They prayed and searched and prayed and searched and after many doors closed before them, God swung wide open an unexpected door – one which led to Vienna.
The International Christian School of Vienna is not your typical "Christian school," and the Sattlers are not your typical (or traditional) pair of "missionaries." Whereas the preconceived idea of missionaries is usually of those living in straw huts, baptizing, and suffering along with tribal natives, the Sattler family (now with another little boy, Liam, in tow) are blessed to live in a small apartment right outside the center of a beautiful European city. While Vienna and its people are beautiful, living, working, and parenting abroad comes with struggles of their own variety.
ABOUT THE SCHOOL
Sean teaches secondary math and is involved in many other extra-curricular activities and ministries at ICSV, which has fewer than 250 K-12 students in the same building (yeah, it's small). Because of the location of the school, approximately 50 countries are represented within the student body! The curriculum used is a combination of Christian and secular US systems, but unlike many private Christian schools you may be familiar with, only a small percentage of students claim Christianity as their religious affiliation. After all, remember the number of countries represented by the students!
Planting seeds of faith and living by example are what Sean does by teaching and serving at ICSV. The seeds fall where they may, and it's up to Christ and the hearts of the students whether they land on fertile soil or not. One of the coolest and most unique – but also kind of frustrating – things about ICSV is that the staff are encouraged to build real relationships with their students, but since the students go out into the world (literally all over the world!) after graduation, administration and staff don't always get see the fruits of their labor, and sometimes never know the impact they've had on a student's heart and future, whether he or she is Christian, Athiest, Muslim, Catholic, etc. It's a pretty incredible position to be in, and Sean and Tawni are honored that God has chosen them for this ministry.
ABOUT LIFE IN VIENNA
Sean and Tawni lead worship together at Christliche Internationale Gemeinde, a bi-lingual, international church in Vienna. While Sean's schedule is otherwise filled with school and school-related meetings and activities, Tawni runs a blog and design shop from home. Their son Jackson attends a bi-lingual Austrian school for grades 1-4, and Liam attends a German-speaking Austrian Kindergarten. Both Jack and Liam are out of school by midday, so they get to spend most of their daytime hours at home or out exploring with their mama.
As of now, the Sattlers' income is in part from ICSV, but without financial support from their church and from family and friends, they would not (and will not) be able to remain in Vienna.
To be specific, the amount Sean is paid by ICSV is enough to cover rent and utilities, and the support from friends and family helps with groceries and other household/family costs.
Tawni has been trying hard to supplement the family's income by doing what she can to monetize her blog and by selling her hand-lettered and hand-painted designs. She recently started a small distribution business with Young Living, as well.
