The True Light // Doodling Through John 1

Reading through the Bible from cover to cover has been a huge challenge for me. I'm reaching a point of overwhelm now, but instead of taking a break, I've found a plan that throws a spin on it, instead.

She Reads Truth provides a The Bible In A Year plan, which just so happens to start in John! So, I hopped on board with it, and it's given me a little more "edge" as I read some of Genesis and Psalms on my journey through John. So in this, the Doodling Through John series, expect to see some Genesis and Psalms thrown in, too.

Okay, enough rambling. Let's dive in!

John 1:5 says, "The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it." And later in verses 9 and 10, "There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him."

Imagine the beauty of the process of the creation of the world. Imagine what it looked like as it was all coming together -- as God was forming the land and sea, turning the lights on here and there, growing plants, molding the animals, and finally forming a man out of dust. God is "a creative," so you know he took his time and enjoyed the process of creating us and our world. If you're a creative person, you can relate on some level. DIYing, knitting, painting, writing, dancing, whatever it is, it brings you joy, and the process is part of the beauty. You don't have to wait for the final product to be able to appreciate the beauty of a work in progress.

So okay, imagine how beautiful the world was even as it was being created. But there was something even more beautiful coming.

There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.
— John 1:9 NASB

I believe that just as there was something even more beautiful -- the True Light, Jesus -- coming to the world, there is something even more beautiful coming to (and from) us as individuals.

You see, we are all still works in progress. We are still in creation mode. God isn't finished with you, and He isn't finished with me. But knowing that, honestly, I sometimes wish He'd just make me beautiful, already; because sometimes I don't see the beauty in His process of creation. (My darkness does not comprehend it.) Sometimes all I see is the ugly, worldly, exhausted mess that I am, and I am blind to the beauty of the process.

But the process is beautiful. If only I could step back, give myself some grace, and recognize that I'm one of God's creations-in-progress... then when my "true light" finally arrives -- when He's finally finished with me and I'm radiant and beautiful, and I am home with Him -- maybe I won't be so saddened by the beauty I took for granted while He was still working on me.

We don't have to wait for a final product in order to appreciate the beauty of a work in progress.
