In context, Simon Peter has just cut off a dude's ear in defense of Jesus. Peter really thinks he's done a huge favor to Jesus and that he's helping protect Him. He means well, and he truly believes he's been of service. Jesus then tells Peter (in so many words) to back off, and that He intends to go through with God's plan:
Here's the thing, now: This, what you're reading here, is my third attempt at writing a post for John 18. And it wasn't that I was distracted or was too tired to write, or whatever... I wrote paragraphs and paragraphs and had styled almost the full post, then something in my heart made me hit DELETE. Twice.
So all I'm going to do now is share with you a short note I wrote to myself when I read that second part of John 18:11. I trust you'll understand my note without further explanation:
That's all I really need to say, and I believe that's all God really wants me to say on this matter.
Oh and, while I'm afraid the quote I found and put in my bible may be a little off-putting to some, it's true to my heart and it belongs in my bible to honor this season. I shared a sneak peek of this page on Instagram, including the full quote, and one friend in response said, "and praise Him for the ones that actually care well!" I couldn't have said it better myself.
With all of the advice, condolences, prayers, and "thinking of yous" that seem to be offered without a second thought, I begin to wonder if anyone intends to take action, anymore. I went on a bit of a rant on Twitter a couple of weeks ago, having been frustrated with a group of people who keep offering their prayers and opinions but don't take action beyond that, when action is theirs to take. The only thing stopping them from "caring well" rather than "meaning well" is themselves.
So again, I'm sorry if this struck a chord with you that doesn't sound quite right, but it's tuned perfectly to the season I'm in.
Leave a note below to let me know if you can relate, and please know that you've got a friend over here!
